We had just come from spending a couple weeks making our way up the East Coast from places like Savannah, Charleston, Williamsburg, and Washington DC.
Our next stops would be New York, Newport, Boston, and Cape Cod, before making our way back home.
I had driven through Philadelphia once before, but never had the opportunity to explore anywhere.
This was both of our first times visiting Philadelphia.

Before we visited, we found that it’s really a competition between two places in particular.
So we decided to try them both and decide for ourselves who has the best Cheesesteaks in Philadelphia.
Pat’s King of Steaks is a legendary Philadelphia institution and a must-visit destination for anyone seeking an authentic taste of the city’s iconic cheesesteak.
With its rich history dating back to 1930, Pat’s King of Steaks offers a mouthwatering experience where visitors can savor the perfectly grilled steak, melted cheese, and fresh rolls that have made it a beloved symbol of Philly’s culinary heritage.

5. Geno’s Steaks
Geno’s Steaks is an iconic Philadelphia eatery renowned for its delicious cheesesteaks and vibrant atmosphere.
A visit to Geno’s is a chance to immerse yourself in the city’s cheesesteak culture, indulge in their mouthwatering creations, and experience firsthand the friendly competition between Pat’s and Geno’s, two legendary rivals that have shaped Philadelphia’s culinary landscape.
We ordered a regular cheesesteak here as well so we would have an even comparison.
Now for our expert opinion:
After trying both Pat’s King of Steaks and Geno’s Steaks, we think that if you take the meat and onions from Pat’s and the bread and cheese from Geno’s, you’d have the perfect Philly Cheesesteak!
6. Valley Forge National Historical Park
Valley Forge National Historical Park, situated just outside of Philadelphia, is a living testament to the resilience and sacrifice of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.
Visitors can explore the hallowed grounds where General George Washington and his troops endured the harsh winter of 1777-1778, gaining a deeper appreciation for the hardships faced and the indomitable spirit that fueled the fight for American independence.
A visit to Valley Forge offers a unique opportunity to connect with history, walk in the footsteps of the founding fathers, and pay tribute to the bravery that shaped the nation.
The great thing about this park is that it is completely free and there is a self guided driving tour you can do to see the park.
There is an audio tour you can download to accompany the drive, which I highly recommend.
There were many spots along the way to get out and walk around.
It’s a very scenic park and was somewhat busy in certain areas.
We were here almost 2 hours.
7. Dinner at J Alexander’s
This is a chain that used to be pretty well known in the Midwest back in the day, but they don’t have too many locations left.
They also used to be known for their honey butter croissants, similar to Cheddar’s Scratch Kitchen, but apparently that has been discontinued (or at least it was at this location).
When we visited, it happened to be restaurant week, so they had many special menu items.
As an appetizer, we tried their Cheeseburger Egg Rolls.
As our entree, we shared an order of a Filet Mignon with a side of a Baked Potato and a side of Baked Mac N Cheese.
For dessert we enjoyed an amazing slice of Key Lime Pie!

It’s much cheaper than staying in the city and there’s free parking.
