*UPDATE: This post was updated 4/4/2023.

This post originally highlighted Macallan’s Public House in Brea, California, but was updated to highlight all the best bars in Anaheim.

Below you can still read the original post.

Macallan’s Public House

This is how we found Macallan’s Public House.

Last week while running errands we ended up in Brea and once we were done we decided to go out to eat instead of going home to cook.

We didn’t want to grab fast food and we were in the mood for some comfort food (and some whiskey), but we weren’t sure exactly what we wanted.

We didn’t feel like going to any of the usual places, so we decided to find out what the most recommended restaurants were in the area.

Our go-to for research is comparing TripAdvisor, Yelp, and Google Maps.

This way we can gather as much information as quickly as possible.

We very rarely just go with the first choice.

We look at pictures, try to get a vibe of the place, check out the menus of the places that intrigue us and narrow it down from there.

On this particular night we were in the mood to have a drink, so that heavily influenced our decision.

After taking all things into consideration we decided to try Macallan’s Public House.

The menu was exactly what I was craving and I knew JP would find some good stuff on the menu too.

It was also very conveniently located very close to where we already were.

Drinks and Appetizers

It was a Friday night, so we were worried it would be too crowded, but the weather was nice enough for outside seating so that helped.

We were able to be seated right away (inside) and started off with a drink while we came up with our game plan.

I went with Irish Coffee because a warm drink just sounded good and I’ve never had an Irish Coffee I didn’t like.

For food, we knew we wanted to save room for dessert because they had bread pudding, so we decided we would share an appetizer and an entree.

We didn’t want to get too full.

That happened anyway and we ended up taking home leftovers, which were just as delicious the second time around by the way.

For starters we went with Fish and Chips because who doesn’t love Fish and Chips?

They had a unique twist with their presentation of the appetizer, which made it all the more fun to eat.

It was fun to use the squirter and flavor the fish how we wanted.

Shepherd’s Pie

For an entree we decided to go with Shepherd’s Pie because I order it at EVERY place we go to that has it.

This Shepherd’s Pie was pretty different from the ones I’ve had in the past, but in a good way.

It was like an elevated Shepherd’s Pie that you would see someone make on those cooking competition shows.

Everything about it was so good and there was so much that even with sharing we took some home.

I’m craving it again as I’m writing this.

I’m really strongly considering making myself presentable and driving over there for lunch.

I mean just look at it!

This is the definition of comfort food.

Dessert

Let’s move on to dessert, the real reason we were there.

MAPLE. BACON. BREAD. PUDDING.

Bread pudding is one of our go-to desserts.

It never disappoints and there are so many variations.

This was no exception.

It looks buried under the ice cream and whipped cream.

But trust me, there is plenty of yummy bread pudding under there.

We devoured that whole thing real quick.

The texture of the bacon with it just brought the whole thing together and the sweetness of the maple made it feel like such an indulgent dessert.

Macallan’s Public House Whiskey

We did not actually try any of the whiskey at Orange County’s #1 Whiskey Bar.

BUT we did find plenty of other reasons to check out Macallan’s Public House.

This is a place that I would want to take friends and family to when they come to California.

It was that good.

The atmosphere is so cozy.

10/10 for sure.
