Does It Snow In Las Vegas?

Have you been wondering, does it snow in Las Vegas? We’ve got you covered with everything you need to know!

Does It Snow In Las Vegas?

The short answer, rarely. Las Vegas gets about 0.3 inches of snowfall per year, which is hardly anything.

So you may expect to see some flurries coming down every once in awhile in the Winter, but don’t expect anything to accumulate. More often than not it’ll melt before it reaches the ground.

Has It Ever Snowed In Las Vegas?

In February 2023, Las Vegas saw some snow flurries in a rare winter storm over the course of several days.

The neighboring Mount Charleston and Red Rock Canyon areas with elevations above 4,000 feet, received several inches of snow in this storm.

In 2008, the neighboring town of Henderson got 3.6 inches of snow in a single day. That is really the only accumulation of snow in the area in over 40 years.

The 1970s were a bit more active for snowfall. Back in 1979, the area saw 7.4 inches of snow accumulate. Additionally, in 1974, there were several occurrences of snowfall accumulating 4+ inches.

Before that, there aren’t really any records of snowfall except for a few occasions in the 1930s and 1940s.

Why Doesn’t Las Vegas Get Snow?

There are a couple reasons for this. For one, the temperatures don’t really dip below 32 degrees very often.

The coldest time of year is December and January and even during those months, the average temperatures are between the high 30s and high 50s.

While this is the “rainy season” for Las Vegas, it really only consists of 3 or 4 days of rain. So the odds of the temperatures being low enough for snow and the odds of having any precipitation occurring at the same time are quite low.

Where Can I See Snow In Las Vegas?

If you’re up for a drive, I highly recommend Zion National Park or the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Zion is only about a 2 hour drive and the North Rim Skywalk is only about a 2 hour and 15 minute drive.

Really any mountainous region or higher elevation nearby will see snow.

A few years ago in February, there was so much snow and ice along the California/Nevada border going into Primm that they shut down the highway overnight for over 6 hours to let the ice melt before re-opening the road!

That was not a fun experience, but it just goes to show you don’t need to be too far outside of Vegas to experience snow.

Snow Resorts Near Las Vegas

Like I said before, Zion is really one of the best places to see snow near Las Vegas. It’s a really cool place to visit in the Winter because you can rent cabins outside the lodge and essentially have the place to yourself!

It’s also one of the few times throughout the year you can drive through Zion without having to take a shuttle.
